Initial Attack

INITIAL ATTACK

Your initial attack is a direct approach to destroy the aggressor’s attack on you. Once you’ve decided to act, you must make your attack fast and hard. Remember, this person is threatening you with physical violence. You have the right to use reasonable force to protect yourself, even if you strike first. It is almost a rule that the one who lands the first punch will win the fight; therefore, you must be sure to see your opening and strike hard and fast.

The idea behind this is twofold: first, by attacking rather than defending, you are confusing your opponent. This first attack not only catches the attacker off guard, it destroys his mindset of attacking you. Chances are, he is used to people backing away from his intimidations, or at least attempting to block or parry his blows. His thinking is, “I will attack her, take her to the ground, and rape her” or “I will stab him with the knife and take his money,” not “well, I’ll try to stab him, but he might punch me in the face, so I got to do this…” He is not expecting that you would attack him without fear. So, by doing this, you’ve made him think about what to do next, whereas you know what to do. In the mental part of the fight, you have the advantage.

Second, your first strike, if done quickly, forcefully, and accurately, will debilitate your attacker physically, or at least set you up to follow through with combinations. Once your attacker is in pain, fear will be rushing through his brain; he is not only confused, but scared. Thus you will not only have the mental advantage, but the physical edge as well.
